For those who complain about the Long Island Rail Road, here's one train system that always runs on time and has been improved, upgraded and expanded every year for nearly 30 years.

The St. James Model Railroad Club is holding its annual open house, a traditional holiday event perfect for grandparents and grandkids. The club's 38-by-48-foot layout includes classic Lionel steam engines, freight trains and modern-day passenger cars chugging along on a scenic design.

The open house is next weekend: Friday, 6-9 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 1, and Sunday, Dec. 2, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., at the historic Mills Pond House in St. James. Admission is $2 for adults and 50 cents for children 17 and younger.

The club is not handicap accessible. For more information, call 631-862-8740.
