AARP has put together a "starter kit" to help new family caregivers cope with their enormous task. "How to Help an Aging Parent" appears in the June-July issue of AARP the Magazine. The guide covers several topics, including ways to know when a family member needs care and how to broach the situation with your loved one. There also are several resources where you can find in-home support and help, or if a residential facility is needed, how to choose one.
The guide includes information on the various forms of professional care available, how much they cost, and agencies and programs that may be able to subsidize some of the expenses.
