It's hard not to be tempted this time of year. Cakes, cookies, holiday beverages and other special treats are everywhere, whether you're at the office or making seasonal visits. For the estimated 12 million seniors with type-2 diabetes, overindulging can be a problem. But if your diabetes is under control, you can enjoy many holiday goodies within moderation. Endocrinologists from Houston Methodist Hospital pass along these tips for staying in the "safe" zone:

AT A GET-TOGETHER where everyone brings a dish, prepare a healthy item you can indulge in without worry.

AVOID SAMPLING EVERYTHING Limit yourself to small portions of two or three special items or desserts.

AVOID FOODS WITH "WHITE" CARBOHYDRATES, such as potatoes and pasta, and instead help yourself to limited portions of fruit.

A FEW ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ARE OK, BUT alternate the drinks with large glasses of water, and never drink on an empty stomach.
