Your bathroom scale tells you no lies, but it may not be telling you the whole truth either.
A person's weight is only one factor in analyzing overall physical shape. To get a better picture, medical professionals use body mass index, well known as BMI. BMI computes body fat using a formula that takes into account height and weight.
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has a free BMI app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users. The app also has links to National Institutes of Health websites where more information and advice can be found. You can download the app at bit.ly/bmi-app.
The institute doesn't offer the app for Android, BlackBerry or Windows smartphones, but users of those devices can find several free BMI apps.
You can also find a BMI calculator on the institute's website, bit.ly/calc-bmi.
