As the nation prepares to celebrate Veterans Day on Tuesday, it is an especially good time to remember those who fought in "The Forgotten War."

The Korean War, because it so quickly followed World War II and was officially known as a "police action," has faded from the memories of many — but certainly not those who fought in it.

Lake Ronkonkoma resident and author George Lipponer fought in Korea and was a survivor of one of its most brutal campaigns, the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. The 17-day battle inside North Korea was fought in freezing conditions in November and December 1950. In addition to numerous combat fatalities, many soldiers died from the extreme cold.

Lipponer will discuss his Korean War memories at Sachem Public Library on Monday at 2:30 p.m. The event is free. For information, call 631-588-5024.
