As the "straight man," Abbott's precision timing and laser-sharp delivery helped the verbal gags soar, turning "Who's on first?" into a catchphrase that has lasted more than 70 years.
A retrospective about Abbott and his place in the comedy pantheon will be held at Sachem Public Library on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Leading the discussion is show business historian Sal St. George, who interviewed Abbott in 1972, two years before his death at age 78. St. George will play parts of the interview, in which Abbott talks about Costello and their career together.
The event is free. For more information or to reserve your spot, call 631-588- 5024 or go to sachemlibrary.org.
