The Federal Citizen Information Center, a unit of the government's General Services Administration, is offering a free publication that can put you in better fiscal and physical shape during the New Year.

"Consumer Action Handbook" is a 160-page booklet that offers advice on a wide range of topics, from buying a car to buying a house to buying an extended warranty. The booklet also has tips on nutrition and retirement benefits. Perhaps most valuable is a list of hundreds of contacts at companies, consumer organizations, better business bureaus and local and federal government agencies.

You can order a free printed copy or download the booklet in PDF form at bit.ly/cah-booklet.
