The cost of long-term-care options on Long Island continues to rise, although not as fast as in recent years.
The annual "Cost of Care" survey from insurer Genworth Financial found that a semiprivate room in a Long Island nursing home costs, on average, $149,600 a year, up 2.5 percent from the 2011 survey.
Long Island is again one of the most expensive areas in the country for nursing home care. The average annual cost of a semiprivate room in New York State as a whole was $118,625. Nationwide, the average cost was $73,000.
For those needing less intensive care, a home health aide costs, on average, $51,480 a year (based on 44 hours a week), up 2.3 percent from last year.
Genworth says one factor helping keep the price increases relatively muted is that an increasing number of home care agencies are providing consumers with more options than in the past.
