When was rock music finally considered a significant art form by mainstream music critics? Some say it was when it became an opera.

"Tommy," a "rock opera" by The Who, was released in May 1969. The album details the saga of a "deaf, dumb and blind kid" who becomes a pinball wizard and cult leader. The album, which reflected the sex and drugs of the era, spawned a 1975 film and several stage shows.

A new adaptation of "Tommy" opens at Theatre Three in Port Jefferson Friday and runs through Aug. 13. Tickets are $15-$28, depending on the performance Discounts for seniors 65 and older are available for most performances. For more information, go to theatrethree.com or call 631-928-9100.
