Along with holiday cheer, December often means 31 days of cooking and baking and eating. But amid the celebrations and feasting, don't forget about food safety. Those leftovers can go from a delicious midnight snack to a recipe for disaster if they are not handled or stored correctly.

On Wednesday, Sachem Library is offering a quick refresher course on food safety. Margaret Dixon, a food-safety consultant and former restaurant inspector for the Nassau County Department of Health, will give tips and tricks on how to avoid those nasty foodborne illnesses that can ruin your holiday season. Adults 50 and older are more susceptible to serious complications from foodborne illnesses than younger people.

The seminar is free and begins at 7 p.m. For more information, call 631-588-5024.
