Here's the ticket to allow grandpa to become a kid again, and for your grandchildren to use their imagination in a way that is often becoming unimaginable in their often insulated world of smartphones, tablets and video games.
Each year in early December, the St. James Model Railroad Club opens its doors so visitors can view the organization's centerpiece: the 38-foot-by-48-foot Lionel layout featuring chugging freight, steam and passenger trains. The layout reflects 31 years of continual improvements and upgrades by club members.
The club's annual open house is Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults and 50 cents for anyone 17 and younger. For more information, call 516-263-9607. The club, which is in the historic Mills Pond House on Route 25, is not handicap accessible.
