What do you get when two organizations put out their "10 most affordable cities for retirement" lists? Try 20 different cities.

In the new list from AARP (aarp.us/vw2C44), Winchester, Va., with a median housing price of $151,500, tops the list because of its laid-back "bucolic bliss" and proximity to cultural and historic attractions. Rounding out AARP's Top 10: Portland, Maine; Gainesville, Ga.; Wenatchee, Wash.; Tulsa, Okla.; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Columbus, Ind.; Ithaca (the only city from New York on either list); Harrisburg, Pa.; and Midland, Texas.

In the list from Kiplinger's (bit.ly/t03Uu0), Birmingham, Ala., is No. 1 because of its low taxes, low living costs and temperate weather. The rest of the Kiplinger's list: Tucson, Ariz.; Winston-Salem, N.C.; Manchester, N.H.; New Orleans; Spokane, Wash.; Charleston, S.C.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Palm Bay, Fla.; and St. Louis.
