Tip: Apply to make a dream come true
While some older people are staying afloat as the economy languishes, others are sinking.
A new charitable program may help some struggling Long Island seniors. "Senior Dreams Come True," established by Melville elder-law firm Genser, Dubow, Genser and Cona, will help fulfill the wish of a selected low-income senior once a month.
Some examples of potential wishes are home improvements, medical treatments not covered by insurance and basic needs. The first award, a mattress and box springs donated by Sleepy's, was presented to a Ronkonkoma couple this month.
To qualify, an applicant must be 65 or older and certify that his or her income is no more than $1,500 a month ($2,000 for a married couple). The firm says award winners will be chosen after applicants submit a letter "describing their wish and documenting how they have contributed to society in some way."
