Autumn arrives Friday, and it's a perfect time for outdoor exercise. Bike riding is gaining in popularity with boomers and seniors because it provides an aerobic workout that's easy on the knees. But as a recent Newsday analysis shows, biking on Long Island comes with risks, most prominently a higher crash death rate than on the congested streets of New York City.

For older riders, several keys to staying safe begin before getting on the road. Experts say upright handlebars help older riders because they can ease back strain and improve your line of sight. Swap out standard handlebar grips for ergonomic grips, which Arthritis Today magazine says distributes pressure across your hands, helping you better control the bike. Supersize the standard narrow saddle seat for something a bit wider and more comfortable. Get a helmet that fits and always wear it.
