Many older Long Islanders are carrying large amounts of debt into their retirement years. And with the drop in housing prices, some owe more on their mortgage than their house is worth. Add in the weak employment picture, and it's a recipe for financial disaster for some.

If you're in this situation, you may want to attend the free workshop "How to Avoid a Financial Meltdown." Among the topics will be debt management, avoiding and fighting foreclosure and loan modification. Counselors will be available for one-on-one consultations.

The workshop, sponsored by Family Service League, Tri CYA and Housing Help Inc., is 7 p.m. Wednesday at Tri CYA's office in the Big H Shopping Center on New York Avenue (Route 110), in Huntington. For more information, call 631-427-3700, ext. 264, or send an e-mail to pmoyamancera@fsl-li.org.
