Research has shown that eating whole grains can reduce cholesterol, lower blood pressure and help diabetics maintain proper blood glucose levels. Whole grains also have been shown to fight some cancers and help keep your weight down.

Unless you're a label-reading fanatic, you may be fooled by foods that say they are "made with whole grains" or "multigrain" but actually are largely made with less-beneficial refined grains.

To help reduce the confusion and raise your consciousness, Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Nassau Department of Senior Citizen Affairs are sponsoring a free seminar, "Choose Whole Grains," at Elmont Public Library, Thursday 11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Call 516-354-5280 for more information.
