You're probably wise enough to avoid a get-rich-quick scheme. But can you recognize a retire-early scam?

The Securities and Exchange Commission warns people in their late 50s and early 60s to be wary of early-retirement seminars where sponsors make unrealistic promises. Here are a few statements you may hear that should raise red flags, according to the SEC:

"Everyone can retire early." In fact, the SEC says, very few can.

"Expect returns of at least 12 percent." This is well beyond the long-term average return for stocks and bonds. In fact, a "guarantee" of any return is a red flag, because all investments have risk.

"This investment opportunity won't last." If you feel pressured to make a quick decision, the SEC says "steer clear." The agency says even if it's not fraud, this type of sales pitch is inappropriate.
