You should be taking safety precautions when you shop online. But don't drop your guard when you're shopping the old-fashioned way, on line at the store.

The FDIC says thieves may be lurking when you are paying for your purchases. The agency suggests carrying only a few checks and limit the number of credit cards and debit cards in your wallet in case it's stolen or lost. And if you're carrying a lot of dough, never "flash your cash." Take out only the amount you need for the purchase so you don't attract the attention of potential thieves.

Additionally, when you are paying for an item with a credit card, do not feel pressured to give out personal information, such as your phone number, to the person ringing up your purchase. The FDIC says this information is voluntary.
