Spring training is not just for high-priced baseball players in Florida and Arizona. It's also for priceless volunteers who are needed to begin training locally for a really important team on Long Island.

The Ombudservice programs of Nassau and Suffolk are looking for volunteers who can devote one day a week to act as patient advocates at local nursing homes and assisted-living centers. As a patient advocate, you will be the voice of elderly adults, many too frail to speak for themselves.

Before you are sent to a nearby facility, the state-mandated program includes an extensive training period, which begins next month.

For Suffolk volunteers, training is in Bay Shore; call the Family Service League at 631-427-3700, ext. 240. To volunteer in Nassau, call Family and Children's Association at 516-466-9718; training is in Mineola.
