The number of hip replacement surgeries has doubled over the past decade, and most people getting the procedure are between 60 and 80 years old, according to government data.

Hip replacements are popular because they can restore lost functionality or ease chronic pain when the joint has reached the "bone-on-bone" stage. But while the surgery is becoming more common, it is not without potential risks, drawbacks and sometimes painful and prolonged recovery.

If you are considering hip replacement surgery, check out four new videos at the National Institutes of Health's senior health website. The videos cover whether the surgery is right for you, precautions you will have to take to make sure the surgery is a success and physical therapy you can expect as part of your recovery.
