This week's tomato challenger: Tina Kraemer

Tina Kraemer of Bohemia started her tomatoes in newspaper pots and placed them in a miniature greenhouse on a grow mat on her kitchen counter. "When they started to sprout," she writes, "I took off the top of the greenhouse and placed them in a south-facing window." Kraemer started her seedlings so early this year she had to repot them twice before the weather allowed her to transplant them outdoors at the end of May. She incorporated crushed egg shells into the soil. This year she's growing beefsteak, brandywine, hillbilly, rainbow, giant Belgium, yellow stuffers, magnum, jelly bean and yellow pear varieties, one of which she hopes will win this year's Great Long Island Tomato Challenge. "I don't plant a lot," she says, "because I am the only person who eats them."
