2 men rescued from grounded sailboat in Great SouthBay

Two Bronx boaters who were stranded in the Great South Bay for nearly 30 hours were rescued Sunday by the Suffolk police Marine Bureau.

Police said Luis Cosme, 39, and Jose Llanos, 46, of the Bronx had purchased a sailboat in Bay Shore on Saturday and set sail for City Island in the Bronx about 3 p.m.

At about 4:30 p.m. the men ran the newly purchased 1981 24-foot Tanze sailboat aground just west of Elder Island off Copiague.

A resident who lives across from Elder Island spotted the boat Sunday at about 4 p.m. and called Suffolk police, who dispatched aviation section officers to find the stranded boat.

Marine bureau officers Pete Conte, Gerard Legoff and Robert Jenkins rescued the men about 7 p.m., and both were treated at the scene by Copiague Fire Department officers.
