Friday's heavy rainfall had led Nassau County to close 19 beaches to bathing and Suffolk County advises no bathing at 67 beaches because storm runoff could raise bacterial levels in the water, health departments in both counties announced.

The North Shore beaches in Nassau that are closed are: Centre Island Sound, Creek Club, Lattingtown Beach, Laurel Hollow Beach, Morgan Sound, North Hempstead Beach Park, Piping Rock Beach Club, Pryibil Beach, Ransom Beach, Roosevelt Beach, Sea Cliff Village Beach, Soundside Beach, Stehli Beach, Tappen Beach.

The beaches on Suffolk's advisory list are in areas affected by stormwater runoff from surrounding watersheds and/or adjacent tributaries and because they experience limited tidal flushing, according to a health department news release.

Those beaches in Suffolk are indicated in the "bathing beach advisories and closures" section of the health department's website at http://www.suffolkcountyny.gov/health.
