At some point this weekend, about 37,000 Long Island Power Authority customers were without electricity because power lines were damaged by heavy winds.
Most of the storm-related outages were restored by early Monday, spokesman Mark Gross said. Most of the 126 outages reported by LIPA at 7:30 a.m. were new outages and not storm related, Gross said.
Gross said the most storm-related outages at any point during the weekend was about 10,000 on Saturday at 4 p.m.
The worst of the gusting northwest winds struck Saturday between 5 and 8 p.m., the National Weather Service said, with a high gust of 52 mph recorded in Farmingdale. The winds weakened throughout the day Sunday, with gusts of 46 mph recorded in Islip.
Some of the heaviest power losses were reported in Hempstead Town and Commack, LIPA said. By 9 p.m. Sunday, the LIPA website reported power was restored to all but 1,138 customers.
The winds also caused delays in air travel Sunday afternoon. Flights to Kennedy Airport were delayed an average of two hours and 21 minutes, while flights to Newark Liberty Airport were an average one hour and 39 minutes late and flights to LaGuardia Airport averaged 38 minutes behind, according to the Federal Aviation Administration's website.
Flights to Long Island MacArthur Airport faced minimal delays, the FAA website said.
The forecast for Monday is sunny, with a high temperature near 57, with northwest winds between 13 and 21 mph, according the National Weather Service.
