Federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York collected more than $2.2 billion in fiscal 2012-13 as a result of criminal and civil cases, officials said.

The district, which covers Long Island, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, collected $904 million in criminal and civil actions, such as case settlements, U.S. District Attorney Loretta Lynch said.

Much of the collections came as a result of joint cases with other districts.

The Eastern District, working with other districts, collected another $1.3 billion in criminal asset forfeitures, Lynch said.

The largest single collection was a $748 million settlement with the Amgen biotech company, resolving criminal and civil liability for the sale of Aranesp, an anemia drug, Lynch said.

The settlement, aided by federal prosecutors in Massachusetts and the state of Washington, involved the illegal sale of the drug for "off-label" doses that the Food and Drug Administration had rejected, Lynch said.
