Police: Bellerose man dies after trying to save nephew from drowning
A Bellerose man, in critical condition since trying to save his nephew before he drowned over the weekend at upstate White Lake, has died, state police said Tuesday.
Afrid Haider, 34, his nephew, Basir Amin, 18, and Amin's sister, Nasrin 21, also of Bellerose, had been swimming about four hours Sunday when shortly after 2 p.m., Amin began to "struggle in the deep portion of the lake," state police said in a news release Monday.
Haider and Nasrin Amin "attempted to assist Basir. Subsequently all three went under the water and did not resurface," the Monday release said.
Firefighters from nearby Bethel brought the three to the lake's surface, but they "were under the water for a period of time. Life-saving measures were started immediately."
All three were transported to Garnet Health Medical Center in Harris where Basir Amin was pronounced dead, according to state police. On Tuesday, state police said Haider had died.
Nasrin Amin was in critical condition Monday, according to state police, but they did not provide an update Tuesday.
