Biker, pedestrian injured in 2 Sunrise Highway crashes, cops say
Two people were seriously injured in separate roadway crashes that shut down eastbound Sunrise Highway Monday night, one in Nassau and one in Suffolk, authorities said.
In Bellmore, a motorcyclist going south on Bedford Avenue crashed with a northbound truck that was trying to make a left onto Sunrise Highway about 7:30 p.m., shutting down lanes for hours, Nassau police said. The biker, 54, suffered serious chest and leg injuries and was in critical condition at a hospital early Tuesday morning, police said.
No other injuries were reported, police said, and no criminality was suspected. Both vehicles in the Bellmore crash were impounded, police said.
In East Islip, a male pedestrian was hit by a vehicle just east of Connetquot Avenue, Suffolk police said. He was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with serious injuries, police said. The crash happened about 8:15 p.m., shutting down lanes for about three hours, authorities said. The vehicle was impounded, police said, and no charges were filed Monday night. Other details were not released.
