Bridge to be named for Det. Peter Figoski

ALBANY -- Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed a law Thursday to rename a bridge on state Route 109 in West Babylon in honor of fallen New York Police Det. Peter Figoski.
Figoski of West Babylon was fatally shot when responding to the botched robbery of a drug dealer in Brooklyn. The bridge, which crosses Sunrise Highway, is renamed the New York City Police Department Detective Peter Figoski Memorial Bridge.
The bill was sponsored by Sen. Phil Boyle (R-Bay Shore) and Assemb. Joseph Saladino (R-Massapequa), who said the honor will ensure that residents remember the sacrifice of Figoski, who was 47 when he died.
Three men were convicted in Figoski's death, with the gunman, Lamont Pride, receiving a 45-yearto life sentence.
Cuomo signed several similar measures, including one to rename a North Hempstead bridge in honor of Nassau County Police Officer Joseph P. Olivieri Jr. of Middle Island.
Olivieri, 43, was fatally struck by an SUV in 2012 while responding to an accident on the Long Island Expressway. The bridge is on New Hyde Park Road where it crosses the LIE in Manhasset.
The Olivieri bill was sponsored by Sen. Jack Martins (R-Mineola) and Assemb. Michelle Schimel (D-Great Neck).
