Business week ahead, Sept. 11-15

KEY EVENT: Summer sluggishness. Job creation on Long Island and nationally appears to be slowing. The recent national jobs report for August showed fewer jobs created than expected. And on Long Island, while 16,700 jobs were added in July, that was the second-lowest monthly total since June 2016. A local update comes Thursday when the state Labor Department releases jobs added in Nassau and Suffolk in August.
MONDAY: Earnings from British soccer team owner Manchester United.
TUESDAY: The U.S. Labor Department releases the number of U.S. job openings in August.
WEDNESDAY: Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 8 at its new headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. Earnings: Ronkonkoma protective garments maker Lakeland Industries.
THURSDAY: Consumer prices for August from the U.S. Labor Department. The release includes a breakout of prices in the 31 Northeast counties including Long Island. Also from the Labor Department: jobless benefits claims for the week ended Sept. 9.
FRIDAY: The Federal Reserve Bank of New York releases the September Empire State survey, an update on state manufacturing. Also, August retail sales from the Commerce Department. And “quadruple witching,” the sometimes-volatile quarterly stock market event where index futures, index options, stock options and stock futures all expire.
