Calm conditions expected for Long Island waters over Memorial Day weekend, forecasters say

Tranquil winds and seas are expected for most of the Memorial Day weekend, the National Weather Service said Thursday in its marine forecast for Long Island.

High pressure briefly builds across the waters Thursday and then departs and low pressure approaches and tracks south and east, the service's Upton office said.

As a cold front moves in Friday afternoon, light northerly winds are expected to develop and shift west. Some gusts of up to 30 knots along the shore are possible.

Tranquil conditions are expected Saturday and Sunday morning as high pressure builds again.

A southwesterly flow likely will increase to 15 to 20 knots and build ocean waves to 5 feet later on Sunday.

But ocean waters are expected to remain at sub small craft advisory conditions through Monday.

Long Island's inland forecast Thursday calls for daily highs near 60, with light and variable south winds. There's also a slight chance of afternoon rain.

The weekend forecast indicates mostly dry conditions Friday through Monday, the service said.
