Coast Guard rescues diver off Fire Island
A Long Island diver suffering from decompression sickness was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard off Fire Island Inlet, authorities said.
Freeport-based Lockness Dive Boat was 35 miles southeast of the inlet Saturday when a crew member called the Coast Guard for help with the 60-year-old diver. Lockness Captain John Gorman said he suspects the computer the man used to regulate his dive may have malfunctioned.
The Coast Guard picked up the man at about 5:30 p.m., Gorman said. He was taken to Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson, treated and released, Gorman said.
The Lockness was in the news in May when an avid 65-year-old diver from Somers in Westchester perished while diving from the vessel.
Gorman said Saturday's dive took place about 30 miles east of where the May death occurred.
