Republican Legis. Rob Trotta’s attempt to eliminate Justin Meyers’ $144,000-a-year job as assistant Suffolk County police commissioner was effectively killed Tuesday as a legislative committee tabled the measure indefinitely.

The Budget and Finance Committee voted unanimously for the tabling. GOP Legis. Leslie Kennedy declined to say why she voted with Democrats against the resolution of her fellow Smithtown lawmaker.

Trotta said Police Commissioner Timothy Sini is using Meyers to indirectly promote his campaign as the Democratic candidate for county district attorney with a stream of news conferences about subjects including snowstorms and stolen cars that previous commissioners did not engage in.

Democrats on the committee defended Meyers and Sini for informing the public about department accomplishments.

Legis. Kate Browning (WF-Shirley) said Sini has “has had to do a lot to turn around the reputation of the police department,” after the conviction of former Chief of Department James Burke. Burke pleaded guilty to federal charges of beating a suspect accused of stealing items from his police SUV and then trying to cover up the incident.
