Suffolk sheriff contender Larry Zacarese had to spend $1,050 to get a permit from Southampton Town to use an unoccupied “McMansion” for his recent fundraiser, headlined by former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
Zacarese, who is challenging State Sen. Phil Boyle in Tuesday’s GOP primary for sheriff, said the town attorney called after notices went out about the $500-a-head event on Aug. 11, saying the town got an anonymous call saying the house was being used improperly and needed a special event permit. The issue came to light in Zacarese’s most recent campaign finance filing, where he reported the unusual expense.
The candidate said the developer who owns the $5.2 million home, which is up for sale, had allowed a a half dozen events including one promoting Maseratis and Ferraris.
Zacarese said he filed an 11-page application and paid the fee.
“One can only speculate that the complaint was made to embarass the campaign,” he said.
