Lawrence Zacarese surfaces as potential sheriff candidate

Another name has surfaced as a potential Republican candidate for Suffolk County sheriff — Lawrence M. Zacarese, a lawyer, a former New York City police sergeant and currently assistant chief of the Stony Brook University police, who also works as a private security consultant.
Zacarese, 41, a Kings Park resident, has set up his own website and met with Suffolk GOP leader John Jay LaValle as well as his town GOP leader, Bill Ellis. He has also formed a fundraising committee, but has yet to report any contributions.
He joins Fred Sales, a former Suffolk police officer from Amityville, in looking to take on incumbent Sheriff Vincent DeMarco, a Conservative who is facing opposition in his own party, but has backing from LaValle and Richard Schaffer, Suffolk Democratic chairman.
Zacarese, a Smithtown GOP committee member, said he is willing to wage a primary if necessary for the nomination. “I think the people of the county deserve a choice and I believe I bring a lot to the table . . . I’ll give it a good fight.”
