Islip Town Board member Steve Flotteron says he is “very strongly considering” a run next year for the seat of term-limited Suffolk Legis. Thomas Barraga (R-West Islip).

Flotteron, 55, a Republican who has been a town board member since 2006, said he sees a race for the 11th District seat as “the next step” even though under the town’s term limit law, he still would be eligible to serve another term on the town board. “If I don’t take the opportunity now, I may be waiting for 12 years,” said the Brightwaters resident. The job of councilman pays $77,200 a year, while county lawmakers make $100,852 annually.

William Garbarino, Islip GOP chair, said he has not spoken to Flotteron, but is aware of his interest, adding it is too soon after the last election to begin considering next year’s slate.

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said, “Steve is certainly important part of our team in the town, I’d hate to lose him, but I consider him a friend and would support whatever he wants to do.”
