How bad was Election Day for Suffolk Democratic chairman Richard Schaffer?

Schaffer, who is also Babylon Town supervisor, only managed to win his hometown and power base for Hillary Clinton by a scant 300 votes out of 80,000 votes cast. Only three other towns — all on the East End — went for Clinton. Tiny Shelter Island gave Clinton a 197-vote margin, Clinton won by 95 votes in Southampton, and East Hampton gave the former secretary of state the largest plurality with a margin of 2,656.

John Jay LaValle, Suffolk GOP chairman, can crow. Trump, who won Suffolk by 51,450, had his largest margin in LaValle’s hometown, Brookhaven, where Trump won by more than 40,000 votes. Next came Smithtown, where Trump had a 15,400-vote edge, and Islip, where Trump won by 5,355.
