Cops: Car runs stop sign, hits school bus

A bus carrying four children and a car collided this afternoon, after a 23-year-old woman didn't yield at a stop sign, Suffolk police said.

Rita Canales, 23, of Bayville, was driving a 2008 Nissan sedan west on West 11th Street in Huntington Station, when, according to witnesses, she failed to yield at a stop sign and struck a school bus that was already in the intersection, police said.

The bus, which was traveling north on Fourth Avenue, was taking four children from the Developmental Disabilities Institute in Huntington, police said.

All four children on board, about 3 and 4 years old, were taken to Huntington Hospital for observation as a precaution. A female adult passenger on the bus was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. The male bus driver was not injured, police said.

Canales was also brought to the hospital, where she was treated for minor neck injuries, police said. There were no passengers in her car. Canales was issued summonses for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle, failure to stop for a stop sign, failure to yield the right of way at an intersection, avoiding intersection or traffic-control device and failure to produce license, police said.

The 911 call came in at 3:53 p.m., police said.
