A Dix Hills man who acted as a "mortgage modification specialist" was arrested Monday on charges he swindled a Hempstead couple out of more than $17,000 for mortgage payments he said he would make on the couple's behalf, but didn't, Nassau County police said.

Mark Savransky, 54, of 5 Alley Pond Court, Dix Hills, was being held on charges of third-degree grand larceny Monday night and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in First District Court, Hempstead.

According to Third Squad detectives, Savransky was hired by a Spanish-speaking couple in Hempstead Village facing foreclosure to help them apply for a mortgage modification. Police said Savransky worked out of an office at 1 Old Country Rd., Carle Place.

Police said Savransky advised the married couple, whom police did not name, that there would be a three-month trial period to demonstrate to the bank that they were able to make payments consistently. Police said Savransky also told the couple to give him the required payment amount so he could make the payments to the bank on their behalf.

Even after the three-month period, police said Savransky continued to collect the required amount -- between July 2013 and January -- and the homeowners thought the payments were being applied to their mortgage.

But last month, police said the couple learned their home was again in foreclosure. The bank told them it had not received payments since June 2013.

The police were called and an investigation led to Savransky, who was arrested after he arrived at the victims' home to collect another month's payment. Police said the victims lost more than $17,000.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of such a scheme is asked to call Third Squad detectives at 516-573-6354.
