A restaurant in Merrick was evacuated and a street closed off on Saturday evening while authorities investigated a suspicious item that turned out to be harmless, Nassau County police said.

Police said they received a report at 6:34 p.m. of a suspicious backpack near a large trash container behind Taco Bell at 1709 Merrick Rd.

The restaurant was evacuated and Merrick Road was shut down while the police arson-bomb squad and emergency services unit responded and investigated the item.

Police said no explosive devices were found and the backpack was not dangerous. The restaurant and street were eventually reopened.
