A kite surfer traveling from Tobay Beach in Nassau County to Oak Island in Babylon became separated from a group and then stranded Thursday, police said. But rescuers found him uninjured in marshes a few hours later.

The other kite surfers realized about 3 p.m. that Timothy Weekley, 36, of Manhattan, was missing and notified authorities about 4:40 p.m., police said.

Helicopters and boats from both Nassau and Suffolk police departments began a search, and Weekley was discovered at Cedar Beach in Babylon about an hour later, police said.

He was stranded in 1 to 2 feet of water, police said, and due to high winds and strong waves, decided to wait there for rescuers rather than try to get back into the channel.

He was treated at the scene for exhaustion and exposure, but declined any other medical treatment, Suffolk police said.
