A portion of Sunrise Highway reopened in Massapequa Park after being closed for hours because a vehicle struck and seriously injured a 14-year-old bicyclist early Saturday morning, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
The crash happened around 4 a.m. near the intersection of Sunrise Highway’s eastbound lane and Cartwright Boulevard. A 23-year-old man was driving a 2023 Kia Forte east on the highway when he struck the teenage boy near the intersection of Block Boulevard, according to police.
A police spokesman says the 14-year-old bicyclist is in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries at a hospital. Police originally told Newsday the bicyclist's injuries were not serious.
As of 2 p.m., all lanes on the highway were reopened. Police had shut down a roughly 400-foot stretch of the highway, between Cartwright and Block boulevards, for most of Saturday morning.
The driver of the vehicle has not been arrested and is not suspected of any wrongdoing, but the investigation is ongoing, according to the spokesman. The driver was not hurt and remained at the crash site, according to a Nassau police news release.
The agency did not provide other details about the crash.
