2nd man arrested in Hempstead shooting, Nassau police say

A second man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a midnight shootout in Hempstead almost six months ago, Nassau County police said.

Saheim Douglas, 32, who has no known address, was arrested Monday and was remanded to the Nassau jail after arraignment Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead on charges of attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest, police said.

Douglas and Darren B. Devane, 29, exchanged gunfire about 12:03 a.m. on Sept. 25 at the corner of Terrace Avenue and Bedell Street, police said.

One of the bullets penetrated the windshield of a car stopped at a traffic signal, and the shattered glass cut the 32-year-old driver in her arm and forehead, police said. She was treated at a hospital, police said.

Devane was arrested at his apartment on Terrace Avenue a short time after the shooting and charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and violation of parole.

Devane is being held on bail of $500,000 bond or $300,000 cash, online court records show.
