5 arrested at Labor Day weekend sobriety checkpoint, cops say

Five people were arrested at a Labor Day weekend sobriety checkpoint in Hauppauge for allegedly driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol Friday night and early Saturday morning, Suffolk County police said in a news release.
Suffolk police charged three people — residents of Nesconset, Lake Grove and Port Jefferson Station between the ages of 30 and 72 — with driving while intoxicated. Another two people — residents of Jamaica, Queens, and Smithtown ages 29 and 30 — were charged with driving while impaired by drugs.
Police set up the checkpoint up at the corner of Route 347 and Mount Pleasant Road in Hauppauge with assistance from Metropolitan Transportation Authority police.
Suffolk police said 900 vehicles passed through the checkpoint.
The drivers are due to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday.
