A reward of $1,500 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of anyone who might be responsible for the death of two headless hens found in a frozen pond about two weeks ago.

The Suffolk County SPCA said Thursday that it cut the bodies from the ice in Millers Pond in Smithtown on Jan. 16 after getting a tip.

It is illegal to abandon any animal, Chief Roy Gross of the SPCA said.

His agency is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, and a reward of $500 is being offered by Long Island Orchestrating for Nature, Gross said.

Anyone with information on the case can call the SPCA at 631-382-7722, Gross said, and all calls will be kept confidential.

He said he did not know whether the hens had wandered away and been attacked by an animal, or had been abandoned.

“We don’t know what happened. That’s why we’re offering the reward. That’s why we’re putting this out there,” Gross said.

“One thing I want to make clear: I do not suspect any religious overtones. We examined the bodies and there were no markings. It was not a ritualistic killing,” Gross said.
