Accused New York Federal Reserve Bank bomb plotter Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis was indicted Thursday on charges of attempting to detonate a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to al-Qaida.

Nafis, 21, a Bangladeshi student, was arrested last month after the FBI was tipped to his terrorist ambitions and conducted a weeks-long sting operation. He tried to remotely detonate a 1,000-pound truck bomb that had been secretly disabled in front of the Federal Reserve office in lower Manhattan.

Nafis entered the country on a student visa and had been living in Jamaica, Queens.

Although he had no actual ties to terror groups, he wanted al-Qaida approval and support for his operation and believed the FBI undercover agent he was working with had connections to the group.

Nafis faces life in prison on the two charges. No date has been set for his arraignment.

"He's going to plead not guilty when we get to court," said his court-appointed lawyer, Heidi Cesare.
