Two Amityville residents face multiple charges for stealing donation bins in Nassau and rebranding the containers to "sell the donated clothing by the pound for a profit," Nassau police said in a news release.

Lolita Carbajal, 44, and Jose Castro, 41, were taken into custody Wednesday at the residence where they both live following an 11-month investigation into the theft of clothing bins from five locations; "proceeds approximately $17,000.00 US currency," Nassau police said in the release.

"The Defendants had control and access to rebrand the bins as their own, redistribute them to locations and would sell the donated clothing by the pound for a profit," the release said.

Police did not identify the name the two allegedly used to rebrand the bins.

Castro was charged with three counts of fourth-degree grand larceny and three counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property. Carbajal was charged with two counts of fourth-degree grand larceny and four counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, police said.

The two were issued appearance tickets for June 29 in First District Court in Hempstead.
