A West Babylon man has been charged with animal cruelty after his pit bull was found bone thin and emaciated, officials said.

“This dog was starved, over a long period of time. It was not due to any underlying medical condition,” Chief Roy Gross of the Suffolk County SPCA said Monday.

He said Jovan Robinson, 37, was arrested Friday and charged with a misdemeanor. He was released on $250 bail and is scheduled to appear March 18 in First District Court in Central Islip, Gross said.

SPCA detectives went to Robinson’s home after getting a tip that he was neglecting his 10-year-old male pit bull, Tank, Gross said.

The dog was saved because someone picked up the telephone and called the SPCA, Gross said. He urged anyone who knows of animal abuse to call the agency confidentially at 631-382-7722.
