Armed man, 2 accomplices, charged with Nassau robberies

A knife-wielding Island Park man and two accomplices were arrested Thursday and charged with three robberies and an attempted robbery in Nassau that were all committed in less than 24 hours, police said.

Michael Dunleavy, 37, of 119 Trafalgar Blvd. was arrested on multiple robbery charges, weapons possession, attempted robbery, and criminal possession of a controlled substance,

Daniel Smith Sr., 58, and his son, Daniel Smith Jr., 36, both of the Trafalgar Boulevard address, each drove the getaway car during Dunleavy's robberies, police said.

Smith, Sr., was charged with robbery, attempted robbery, and Smith, Jr., was charged with multiple counts of robbery, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Dunleavy brandished a knife in all three robberies and the attempted robbery, Nassau police said.

Dunleavy first robbed the Dunkin' Donuts, 35 East Sunrise Highway, Freeport, at 3:50 a.m., Wednesday, police said. He attempted to rob a Subway sandwich shop at 4385 Austin Blvd., N. Long Beach at 8:17 p.m., that same night, but fled when the cashier called 911, police said. About a half-hour later, Dunleavy robbed a Hess Gas Station at 4295 Austin Blvd., in Long Beach, police said. A few hours later, at 12:40 a.m., Dunleavy robbed the Dunkin' Donuts at 989 Atlantic Ave., Baldwin, police said.

The getaway car reported in the robberies was stopped by a Nassau police sergeant on Long Beach Rd./West Waukena Ave. in Oceanside at 1:15 a.m. Thursday, police said, and Dunleavy and Smith, Jr., who were in the car were arrested. Smith, Sr. was arrested later in the day at their residence.

All three were to be arraigned Friday in First District Court, Hempstead.
