John Strano, of Williston Park, charged in violent beating of 75-year-old relative, police say

A Williston Park man was charged with attempting to murder a 75-year-old family member on Wednesday after allegedly violently attacking her, including striking her in the head with a blunt metal object, police said.

Around 5:40 p.m., Nassau County police responded to a call from a woman who said she was attacked in her Broad Street home by John Strano, 37.

The two were arguing when Strano allegedly pushed the woman down and repeatedly slammed her head to the ground, punched her in the face, struck her head with a blunt metal object and choked her before fleeing, police said.

The woman then went to a nearby house on Amherst Street, from where she called police.

She was taken to a hospital where she remained in stable condition, police said.

Police found Strano nearby and arrested him without incident. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Police did not describe the relationship between the woman and Strano, other than saying they were family members.

Strano was charged with second-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree assault, criminal obstruction breathing/blood circulation and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

He was arraigned on Thursday at Nassau District Court in Hempstead and pleaded not guilty, according to online court documents. He was remanded without bail.
