A son of a Riverhead woman found dead in a wooded area of Manorville earlier this month has been charged with killing her, Suffolk County police said Wednesday.

Curtis Trent Jr., 36, was arrested Wednesday and charged with second-degree murder in the killing of his mother, Kathleen Harrison Trent, 63, following an investigation by Homicide Squad detectives.

The mother and son shared a home together on Forge Road in Riverhead, police said.

Harrison Trent was reported missing on Jan. 29 by a different son after she had not been seen or heard from since Jan. 27, Newsday previously reported. She was last seen at home, police said.

Suffolk police were searching the wooded area south of River Road near Connecticut Avenue on Feb. 11 when they discovered human remains, authorities said.

At that time, the department did not reveal whether the remains matched Harrison Trent, described by police as a blond-haired, blue-eyed woman who was 5-foot-2.

She was later identified following an autopsy by the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.

The department has previously said her death appeared "criminal in nature."

Trent Jr. was arraigned on Wednesday and remanded into custody. It was not immediately clear if a bail application was submitted.
